Frequently Asked Slow Cooker Questions

What is the difference between high heat and low heat?  Can the times be combined?
One hour on high heat equals about 2 - 2 1/2 hours on low heat.  When time is of the essence, high heat and low heat can be combined.  If combining times, high heat is best first, then follow with low heat.

Can I use pasta in my slow cooker?
Yes, pasta can be used, however, pasta recipes are not "all day" recipes.  Pasta is usually done in 4-5 hours maximum.  If making chicken noodle soup, add the noodles during the last 30 minutes to 1 hour of cooking.  The pasta will cook in the heat that is already there.

Can I make bread in my slow cooker?

Yes, you can, but you need to create a barrier between the food and the condensation that will be created during the cooking process.  The best way to do this is to place paper towels across the top of your slow cooker and then place the lid on top.  Pull the towels tight from the corners. No need to worry, the paper towels will never touch your food.

Can I use seafood in my slow cooker?

Yes, but add it the last 30 minutes of cooking time; otherwise the seafood will disintegrate over a long cooking period.  (Halibut and Salmon are best done on the grill).

How much time for uncooked vegetable and meat combinations?

4 hours on high heat or 8 hours on low heat.

When can I add dairy products? (i.e. milk, sour cream, cream cheese, etc.)
No, dairy products should be added during the last 30 minutes to 1 hour of cooking.  Dairy products only need to be heated through.

Will my meat brown in the slow cooker?

No, meat will not brown due to the lack of oxygen getting to the meat.  If you want, you can brown your meat in a skillet first before adding it to the recipe.

How full should my slow cooker be?

When using a slow cooker it should be 1/2 to 3/4 of the way full.  Under-fill the slow cooker and your recipe will be overdone.  Overfill the slow cooker and your food will "spit out" of the slow cooker and additional time will need to be added.  Remember: Food expands when it is heated.

How long did it take you to write your book?
About 2 years of experimenting.  I only had to throw away one recipe - Chicken Noodle Soup, when I put the noodles in at the beginning of the day.....mushy, gooey yuck!!!!

Do I need to stir the recipe?
No, unless the recipe specifies.  Every time the lid is lifted, 15-30 minutes is added to the cooking time.  Resist the temptation!!!!

Can I use my slow cooker outside?
No, the appliance is only for indoor use.

Can I reheat food in my slow cooker?

No, reheating food in a slow cooker is never recommended.
